Default Hamster Babies Died two occasions

Hi,

There are two births occasions of 7 babies hamsters. However, they did not survive on the second week. It is either the female hamster bit the babies to death or the baby was left alone and died.

Is there any steps to undertake once there is a birth for baby hamster ?

Appreciate advice. Thanks.

did all die? probably you gotta monitor them and occasionally you gotta separate them when you arent ard, dont be surprise when you are one or two missing. think this is their nature.

Not all of them died together. It is one or two per day. Quite sad. They are very young and I don't think they can feed solid foods. Which is why I dare not to separate from the mother.

However, end of the day, it is either bitten to death by the mother or left one corner and died.

If I separate them pne they are born, what type of food should I feed them ?

1) Did you separate the father from the mum?
2) Is mum in a cage of her own during and after pregnancy?
3) Did ya touch the babies or the mum during the first week of the birth?

Thanks for the post, below are the answers to your questions.

1) Yes, only after the babies are discovered born. But, each time, the seven babies are alive.

2) Yes, after the babies are born. Mum and babies in a cage. Dad is in the other cage.

3) We did touch the babies and mum. As we want to change the sawdust, as thinking that this new sawdust will not change until the babies are grown to the stage of independence, mean to say that they can take solid foods.

Ooh.. There ya go.
You must never (really have to emphasize never) touch the babies before they are independent of mum. Mothers recognise which babies are theirs by scent. Once you touch them you will transfer your scent onto them causing mum to think they're not hers. The end result is she'll either abandon or cannibalise.

During this period, other than leaving babies alone, don't disturb mum or try to clean the cage even if the bedding smells. Stress can also cause a female to eat her babies if she thinks they might be in danger. You should only be changing the food, water and nothing else. Remove the wheel too.
